Shortly after November 5th, I was invited into a post-election Buddhist support group led by a wonderful Buddhist nun. I am not exaggerating when I say every time she speaks, it feels like she's pulling my heart open. We talk about how we are suffering and also, especially, how we can move forward without losing ourselves, our humanity and our way. I can think of no work that is more important now than knowing who we are.
In a gathering last week, she put forward this quote from an organization called Service Space: Preserving the sacred feels vital in these times. Nobel Laureate Ily Prigogne reminds us, "When a system is far from equilibrium, small islands of coherence in a sea of chaos have the capacity to lift the entire system to a higher order." These small islands, held by forces beyond money or power, are magnetizing into ecosystems of coherence.
While I worry about where our country and world are headed, I also know that the way I stay buoyed on the edge of so many changes beyond my control, is by looking around me and seeing what work I can do, no matter how small it seems, to keep arching towards kindness, generosity, compassion and community. A meal for someone under the weather. A phone call to someone who is struggling. An invite for a walk in nature. Just staying near.
Thank you all for being part of my community and for supporting my work. May we continue to give each other strength and love in the months to come.
